What Temperature Should My Combi Boiler Be Set At?

Published by Adam Bird on May 5, 2023
What temperature should my combi boiler be set at

If you’re the proud owner of a combi boiler, you’re probably aware of the numerous benefits it provides. These boilers are designed to provide on-demand hot water and heating without the need for a separate tank.

However, one important question that’s often raised by homeowners is what temperature their combi boiler should be set at. It’s important to note that setting your boiler temperature too high can lead to wasted energy and higher bills. This is because your boiler will have to work harder to maintain a higher temperature, even when it’s not necessary. In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about combi boiler temperature settings, so you can ensure your home is both comfortable and energy efficient.

So, what is the optimal temperature setting for your boiler? The answer depends on a few factors, such as the size of your home, the level of insulation, and your personal preferences.

In general, a temperature range of 60-70°C (140-158°F) is recommended for most homes.

It’s also worth considering the time of year when setting your boiler temperature. During the winter months, when temperatures are lower, you may want to set your boiler temperature slightly higher to ensure your home stays warm and comfortable. However, during the summer months, you may want to lower your boiler temperature to save on energy costs.

Another factor to consider is the type of radiators you have in your home. If you have traditional cast iron radiators, they may take longer to heat up and require a higher boiler temperature. On the other hand, if you have modern radiators with a larger surface area, they may be able to heat up more quickly and require a lower boiler temperature.

Ultimately, finding the right temperature setting for your boiler may require some trial and error. It’s important to monitor your energy bills and adjust your temperature accordingly to find the optimal balance between comfort and efficiency.

What Settings Should My Combi Boiler Have?

Typically, combi boilers come with two core temperature settings: one for heating and another for hot water. The heating temperature setting will determine how warm your home is, while the hot water temperature setting will regulate the temperature of your domestic hot water.

Heating Temperature Settings

When it comes to heating your home, the ideal temperature setting will depend on a range of factors, including your home’s insulation and the outside weather. Generally, it’s recommended to set your heating temperature between 18°C and 21°C. This will ensure a comfortable temperature within your home, without consuming too much energy or fuel.

However, if you’re concerned about energy efficiency, you may want to consider lowering the temperature slightly. By reducing the heating temperature by just one degree, you could save up to 10% on your energy bills. Alternatively, if you live in an older or less insulated property, you may need to set your heating temperature a little higher to ensure a comfortable temperature within your home.

It’s also worth noting that some combi boilers come with additional heating settings, such as a boost function or a frost protection mode. These can be useful in certain situations, such as when you need to quickly heat up a room or when the temperature outside drops below freezing.

Hot Water Temperature Settings

The hot water temperature setting is equally important, particularly if you’re looking to optimise energy efficiency. While it may be tempting to set your hot water temperature as high as possible, it’s important to remember that this will consume more fuel.

In most cases, it’s recommended to set your hot water temperature between 60°C and 65°C. This will ensure that your water is hot enough to kill bacteria and other microbes, whilst also ensuring efficient energy consumption. However, if you have young children or elderly relatives living in your home, you may want to consider lowering the temperature slightly to reduce the risk of scalding.

It’s also worth noting that some combi boilers come with additional hot water settings, such as a preheat function or a holiday mode. These can be useful in certain situations, such as when you want to preheat your water before taking a shower or when you’re away from home for an extended period of time.

Overall, setting up your combi boiler correctly is essential for ensuring efficient energy consumption and a comfortable living environment.

How To Set Your Boiler Temperature

Firstly, it’s important to understand the different types of boilers available. There are two main types of boilers: combi boilers and conventional boilers. Combi boilers are the most popular type of boiler in the UK, as they are highly efficient and provide both heating and hot water on demand. Conventional boilers, on the other hand, store hot water in a tank and are better suited to larger homes with higher hot water demands.

Once you have determined which type of boiler you have, you can begin to set the temperature. Most modern combi boilers come with controls that enable you to set separate heating and hot water temperatures. To do this, simply locate your boiler’s temperature control panel, which is usually situated on or near the boiler itself. From here, you can adjust the settings according to your preferences, and your boiler will begin to heat your home and hot water accordingly.

I booked Gasworks intially to service a boiler, however after 16yr years it was beyond its shelf life and unserviceable. Adam was very professional and provided different options and advice. I opted for a new boiler at a very competitive price. Adam and his colleague returned within a week to fit the new boiler and flue. They flushed the system, fitted the carbon monoxide alarm and removed the old boiler and all the rubbish. Warranty included. Fantastic experience and would recommend highly.

On a Saturday my old Vokera boiler stopped working and by that Thursday I had a new and stronger Glow Worm boiler installed, with minimal fuss, by Adam. I phoned Adam on the weekend and he came out first thing on Monday to have a look. The gas valve was broken, so Adam sent me over invoices for the broken part and for new boiler without pressure to choose. In the end, given the boiler’s age I opted to have it replaced. He and his colleague came out on Thursday and within a few hours my boiler was installed, and they were so clean with the instal! So so rare with tradespeople. Would 10/10 recommend and will be having him service my boiler annually.
